Compassion Fatigue and the Family Caregiver: When Caring Too Much Can Hurt
Keynote Speaker: Patricia Smith
Patricia Smith is the Founder of the Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project© and Healthy Caregiving, LLC. As a certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist with more than 20 years of training experience, she writes, speaks and facilitates trainings in service of those who care for others in all of the helping professions. With a background in journalism, Patricia’s writings have appeared in numerous publications, including the San Jose Mercury News where she was a correspondent for more than 20 years. Her seminal book, To Weep for a Stranger: Compassion Fatigue in Caregiving, is a comprehensive look at compassion fatigue, its causes and symptoms, and how to begin the healing process. Her book, Compassion Satisfaction: 50 Steps to Healthy Caregiving, guides readers through 50 steps toward authentic, sustainable self-care and compassion satisfaction.
The Role of a Patient Advocate: A Glimpse of a Caregiver's Life
Speaker: Dr. Phillip Choe
Dr. Philip Choe is a board certified geriatrician who completed his training at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Stanford University School of Medicine. He currently serves as a geriatrician at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and as the associate director of the Stanford Geriatric Fellowship Program to train and educate future geriatricians in the Bay Area. His goal is to provide a comprehensive and holistic medical service to the aging population through his training in osteopathy, medical acupuncture, and evidence-based medicine. His academic interest is in curriculum development and quality improvement. In his spare time, he tries to spend as much quality time with his wife and two daughters.
